Joleen holds 

  • a MPhil in Adult Education with a thesis topic of “Language Learning in the Tourism Industry”.
  • a Certificate in Marketing Management [distinction],
  • a certificate in Internet Marketing
  • a Certificate in Project Management

She attended a Tour Operators programme offered by the Department of Economic Development And Tourism and has been involved in Fair Trade in Tourism.

She is the CEO of a registered tourism, hospitality and languages service provider with CATHSSETA, a registered assessor with SAQA and a registered national tourist guide. She has been part of or initiated many community tourism projects.

As part time lecturer at CPUT she has lectured in Tourism Development, Conferencing & Special Event Organising and Events Management.

She currently sits on the QCTO SGB (an elected group of industry specialists who design the new QCTO requirements for training of tourist guides), is a director of the National Tourism Trainers’ Forum and part of the steering committee to professionalise the tourist guiding sector . She also served as the General Secretary of TUSA (Tourism Union of Southern Africa)

Her brainchild, the company Alive!PTLcc, exists because in this company, the tourism industry is seen differently here. For Alive!PTLcc it is about the people. Alive!PTL believes the learners can be a voice and not an echo – they can make a difference – one person at a time. When they leave the programme they should be proud of who they are and share the best of who they are with their clients.

Joleen is a passionate facilitator and tourism entrepreneur who has the sustainable upliftment of her learners at heart. Not only does she impart knowledge, but has successfully assisted learners to change the quality of their lives and work by encouraging them to get to know themselves and their destination. Her community awareness and the respect she has for an individual’s uniqueness have been her trademark.

And she passionately loves South Africa!


Jane Bourdillion

I enjoy all types of creative work, especially art and writing. I have written a couple of short stories for my children when they were younger. I enjoy wildlife, fishing and reading (a lot!). I was schooled at Springfield Convent in Cape Town. I followed this with a 6-month Programme at Sight and Sound Secretarial College.

Started off in tourism with Southern Sun Hotels in Cape Town as Receptionist and eventually left there as Banqueting Assistant.

I then went up to Zimbabwe to Main Camp at Hwange National Park where I was employed as Office Manager. Got married and managed Elephant Sands Safari Lodge near Hwange National Park (5-star game lodge) with my husband for 6 years. During this time I also owned the only restaurant/shop at the Hwange National Airport.

We then came back down to South Africa where I started as Assistant Manager at Thanda Nani Game Lodge in Malelane. My husband and I then bought the Lodge over and we were there for three years after which we sold our shares and I started working for Pestana Kruger Lodge as Front of House Manager for close on 3 years.

I have been working at the Private Game Reserve for just over four years and it is a very active place with diverse activities and Lodges. Students who would like to participate in the tourism training Programmes will battle to find a practical experience which covers as many angles as the Kwa Madwala does.

I look forward to working with you and hope you can learn from all the exciting things that happen every day.

Tania Cilliers

General Manager


The first time I visited the reserve I was blown away by the Manyata Rock Lodge. It is built on a hilltop with dome shaped chalets scattered amongst the rocky outcrops. The camp has a lookout deck with a lounge area on the one side and the dining area on the other side of the deck. The view from up there is just breathtaking. I have a three year diploma in photography and for me it is a photographer’s paradise…

We have two trained elephants on the property and for me this is the highlight of the reserve, after getting to know Tswale and Modjadji I could not help but fall in love with these truly amazing creatures and when I have a few minutes to spare I always go for a quick visit to touch and feed them. It is also a highlight for me to go on an elephant-back safari and being able to see zebra, giraffe, warthog etc. I have learned so much about the anatomy and behavior of these two elephants.

I am an adventurist and enjoy travelling to different areas in South Africa to do marketing for the operation, it always feels like a new adventure to me. I am also a people’s person who loves to chat. I am a strong believer that you have to have a passion for what you do in life and, because I believe in this product and love everything about the bush, my job is not just another job for me, but part of what I believe in and who I am.
